HIGHER PURPOSE
THE ELDERS PATHWAY TO LIBERATION
(A 5-Minute Read)
THE BOTTOM LINE:
One of the Contemporary Elder Institute’s foundational principles is that standing in and for a higher purpose is the key to freedom and achieving true emancipation from today’s troubling, uncertain, and chaotic conditions.
Read again, read slower, understand exactly what it means and then think about what it would mean in your life if it were true.
Our foundational principle is that standing in and for a higher purpose is the key to freedom and achieving true emancipation from today’s troubling, uncertain, and chaotic conditions.
This principle emphasizes that your path to freedom, self-sovereignty, inner peace in today's uncertain and chaotic world rests in living and acting in accord with your higher purpose.
HOW DOES HIGHER PURPOSE WORK?
Here’s what we, as contemporary elders, have learned about adopting and embedding our higher purpose.
Embracing alignment with your respective higher purpose directs your actions, decisions, and intentions toward a deeper sense of meaning and a commitment to something greater than yourself.
Your ego and identity issues ungrasp.
You operate from a commitment now governed by your higher purpose. Minimal external noise distorts the calling. Your line to your higher purpose has no static.
You embody a higher purpose which allows you to override much of your internal unsubstantiated assessments, judgements, explanations about yourself and others. Those thoughts show up as “junk mail.”
Your choices, how you speak and what you say to yourself and others, how you act in your relationships, and what you do in the world—yes, all shift.
Living out of a higher purpose is much more easily said than done in a culture focused on the individual, where success is measured by personal gain and immediate gratification. Higher purpose isn’t about you. That’s what’s causing the dissonance.
When you embody a higher purpose, you more spaciously navigate the complexities and disturbances of life. It keeps you focused and your head in the game. You’re not distracted by the “crowd noise.”
Your teammates on the field are people you didn’t think you could be a part of, but now, here you are. You feel like you belong on this playing field.
You’ve earned your spot as a starter.
THE ELDER'S HIGHER PURPOSE
An Elder lives inside an astonishing inheritance. Elders have a consecrated heritage. The essence of Elder has been passed on through the millennia. Their eternal responsibility is, was and will be, to maintain the best of humanity in their communities.
Elders have appeared in history and cultures for as long as human societies have existed. The concept of Elder is deeply rooted into the structures of ancient communities and tribes, where age and experience but more importantly wisdom, were highly valued. That is an Elder’ liniage
And what generated their being and actions was the inherited higher purpose which was now fully their own. Elders appreciate and honor their ancestors. Their past is part of an Elder’s present.
An Elder’s speaking from their higher purpose resonates deeply in others, stirring something powerful within them that transcends the words.
Operating from their higher purpose, Elders are uplifted, not downtrodden.
Their higher purpose shapes who they are now. The influence of the past, and all their required identities needed for success, are consciously dismissed. Elders have become their own incarnation.
Elders experiencing a higher purpose gives them a transcendent sense of meaning. They now operate out of their greater humanity, without much concern for what others might think or say. They know, feel, and thrive when they become their higher purpose in being and action.
Standing in their higher purpose, Elders develop a toughness without meanness. When faced with adversity, they step back into their higher purpose because their goals are much more meaningful. A higher purpose keeps an Elder on purpose.
Elders operate free and clear from the “growing old” context, concepts and gossip embedded in our culture. How? Because a higher purpose is eternal in nature which is much more the framework which they inhabit.
Touching the eternal touches how you grow old.
So, the purpose of a higher purpose for Elders is strength, equanimity, and freedom in every dimension of their lives. And engaging with people to be their highest self.
UNCOVERING YOUR HIGHER PURPOSE
A higher purpose is an “inside job.” Be still. Be awake. Your higher purpose is a whisper that can only be heard when you quiet your mind. It is described as an "inside job" because it cannot be directly taught or imparted through external sources.
It is essential to understand that your higher purpose is unique to you. Unbeknownst to you, was already assigned exclusively to you, and only you.
One of a kind. Your higher purpose was seeded at birth, or maybe before, but has not been accessible until now. Buddhists and Hindus call it Dharma. Jews, Tikkun Olam and Halakhah. Christians The Calling and Greatest Commandment.
Your higher purpose resides deep within, inherently part of your human essence. But multiple grimy layers of distraction, ego, fear, and societal conditioning have coated and wrapped it up tight.
So, Stage I is “unwrapping.”
You get to that place where you finally realize whatever you’ve been doing, whoever you’ve been being, especially in these uncertain and chaotic times, is collapsing in on you. It’s taking away your sense of freedom and creativity.
When this condition is acknowledged, this is the opening to uncover your higher purpose, your path to freedom.
But you can quiet the mind and turn inward to access this more profound purpose. It requires stillness, reflection, and a willingness to shed the surface-level noise of daily life.
Higher purpose emerges when you can hear that inner voice. Quakers call it the "little voice within," and the Hindus call it the Atman, a quiet yet profound guide that speaks to your higher consciousness and touches your undeniable truth, your bedrock integrity, and your deepest intention all at once. Elders have figured out to hear that voice and keep it speaking. It’s a psychic app they press frequently.
For Elders, this "little voice" is their central compass, steering their decisions and actions with a sense of duty to the greater good, recognizing the interconnectedness of all and the importance of living for something larger than themselves.
You don’t need to formulate, create, generate, or devise your higher purpose; you need to find it because it intrinsically exists. Already. Always. It’s your cosmic blueprint, the unique design of your being, waiting to be uncovered and lived.
